Cale (Damon) is a rebellious teenager who embarks on an adventure through space to find a legendary spacecraft, the Titan, which holds the secret to salvation for the human race.
The deadly Drej aliens are close behind and Cale cannot trust anyone - friend or foe. He becomes a renegade warrior and a new kind of hero as he embarks on his mission to discover a whole new world.
Titan AE is a clever piece of sci-fi animation, which takes a fairly simple story and uses it to create an enjoyable and believable drama.
Barrymore portrays Akema, Cale's cocky love interest and the rest of the cast creates a chilling impression of what we may be like at the turn of the next millennium.
The soundtrack is in a hip, MTV style and gives the film an overall energetic feel. This is complimented by some inspiring visuals which create a watcheable and fun movie.
The downfall may be the abundance of sci-fi cliche and the tired tale of self-discovery, but these aspects can be overlooked by the viewer as your attention will be diverted by the thrills and excitement.
The space visuals are obvious computer animation and the characters are, in an ambitious move, hand drawn.
Although not of a Disney calibre, the combination works well and although perhaps not the most lifelike of the recent spate of animations, Titan AE is a reasonable competitor in the race for the most imaginative and advanced animation methods.
