Renée Zellweger plays Betty, a Kansas housewife with a philandering husband (Aaron Eckhart), whose drug-dealing ends in his death at the hands of hitmen Morgan Freeman and Chris Rock. Betty flees to California, where she masquerades as a nurse and pursues TV hospital soap star Greg Kinnear, believing he's a real doctor. Director Neal LaBute carries this bizarre romantic drama along on a tightrope-walking level and Zellweger is extraordinary. Throughout the film, there are references to The Wizard of Oz, which was used as inspiration for its look: we said it's bizarre!
