A suitably petulant, imperious Saffron Burrows is formidable as the 1890s Swedish noblewoman locked in a doomed relationship with her footman, and Peter Mullan, though handicapped with a thick Scots accent, is a little marvel of gloomy intensity as the servant. For a play-based movie entirely played out on an interior set of a kitchen, it's completely cinematic, natural and credible, compelling the attention throughout with the help of fine cinematography and Figgis's own music. Small but quite well formed, this sincere effort is worthy of respect.
