The first in a series of made-for-TV whodunits starring and co-written by Gene Wilder. He plays theatre director Cash Carter, who, in 1938, has moved to Stamford, Connecticut, after his wife was killed in a street robbery, and started working with a small community theatre. Carter turns amateur sleuth to help his police detective buddy (Mike Starr) investigate the shooting of rich industrialist Terry O'Quinn. The little seen nowadays Wilder is on fine form with a well-written character to chew on and some decent lines to spit out with a comical spin. But he's the whole show, as the plot isn't up to much, despite a rich gallery of suspects, and the film's period sense is poor.
