Paul Newman excels in this brilliantly spirited caper thriller, which sees him as an infamous old rank robber who gets out of jail by pretending to be catatonically ill. But his gorgeous nurse Linda Fiorentino and her handsome hubby (Dermot Mulroney) start to smell a rat, and they force him to include them in his final felony. The old Newman charm is still there and those blue eyes twinkle and tease, and he shows a sprightly chemistry with Fiorentino, who enjoys her best role since The Last Seduction. The witty, well-plotted script's right on the money and so's the flashy, pacy direction by Marek Kanievska, who made Another Country years ago but almost disappeared from view until Ridley and Tony Scott's Scott Free productions revived his career with this movie.
