The writer and director is probably best known for his family film Secondhand Lions with Michael Caine and Robert Duvall.
However, he received accolades for his script for the animated The Iron Giant, which won a BAFTA children's award.
He began his career writing, performing and directing live theatre before making the critically lauded short Nicole et Claude.
After relocating to LA, he signed a deal with Disney and his screenplay for North Shore was filmed for Universal.
In 1998, he made his feature debut with Dancer, Texas, Pop 81, which became an art festival favourite.
After The Iron Giant he wrote and directed Secondhand Lions, starring Haley Joel Osment as a boy living with his irascible uncles (Caine and Duvall).
Upcoming projects include the script for the remake of Around The World In Eighty Days.
