Exceptionally violent and foul-mouthed, and unrelentingly grim, this is writer Christopher McQuarrie's follow-up to his award-winning The Usual Suspects. A Western in feel, but very much a crime thriller in looks, it features Ryan Phillippe and Benicio Del Toro as ruthless criminals who hatch a plan to kidnap the pregnant surrogate mother (Juliette Lewis) of a wealthy man's baby, only to find the rich guy is a big-shot laundryman for The Mob - and that everyone concerned with the case has ulterior motives. After a superfluous, unconnected opening scene, the film's only way forward is up and the director makes sure it soars into the upper bracket of mystery dramas with extremely intelligent dialogue and complex plotting. You'll need a strong stomach, though, to see things through to the inevitable mass shoot-out at the end.
