Director Michele Soavi takes us on a grim ride into the murky world of cemetery caretaker Francesco Dellamorte, realised in a surprisingly understated performance by Rupert Everett. When corpses suddenly start coming mysteriously to life, an unfazed Dellamorte starts to despatch them violently back underground with the assistance of mute, mentally handicapped gravedigger (Francois Hadji-Lazaro, acting with great facial expressions). The beautiful Anna Falchi appears as three incarnations of Dellamorte?s dream woman. Based loosely on a popular series of Italian comic books, this startling, quite original film deals with life and death, and does so with an unexpectedly clever script, but it is nasty, gruesome and misogynistic and it leaves a bitter taste in the mouth.
