The ever-excellent Brian Dennehy gets to shine in a peach of a role as Sgt John Reed, a dogged cop trying to bring to book a nasty lawyer-cum-mobster (Treat Williams), though the tarnished Chicago police high-ups don't want him on the case. Both Williams and Embeth Davidtz, as the distraught wife he abuses and beats up, also give fine accounts of themselves in this tense, powerful and gripping thriller, based, as ever with Hollywood crime casebooks, on a true case. A John Reed series of TV movies followed, with the character re-named Jack Read.
