An absorbing but sentimental piece about the friendship between a reclusive writer (Sean Connery) and a black teenager (Rob Brown) who tries to hide his enormous gift for writing beneath an almost equal talent for basketball. Later developments in the film founder on the character played by F Murray Abraham, an English tutor who takes a dislike to Brown, cannot believe his work is that talented and determines to see him off. The relationship between Brown and Connery remains warm and emotive.
