Spike Lee's moving documentary takes us back to Birmingham, Alabama, 1964, and tells the story of the church bombing by the Ku Klux Klan, which killed four little black girls and became a pivotal moment in the US civil rights movement. The film contains testimonies from many of the people around at the time: the victims' family members, their friends, followers of Martin Luther King, politicians and other leaders of the local community. One of the most telling sequences is an interview with Alabama's former Governor, the late George C Wallace, which was recorded shortly before his death. Lee lets his subjects speak for themselves - about the good times as well as the bad - and they do so most eloquently. A powerful , enlightening piece.
