The singer and actress has appeared in a number of teen-orientated movies including Princess Diaries and Saved!
The daughter of an airline pilot and ex-newspaper reporter, she decided to follow a singing career after seeing the musical Oklahoma!
As a child, she performed the National Anthem at several athletic events around her hometown of Orlando and became known as the "National Anthem girl".
At 14, while she was recording in a studio in Orlando, a Fed-Ex worker with contacts at Sony heard her sing.
Shortly afterwards she signed a record deal with the music giants and, at 15, released the single So Real and toured with the Backstreet Boys.
She made her big screen debut as a haughty cheerleader in The Princess Diaries in 2001 after voicing roles in Dr Dolittle 2.
The following year she made the romantic drama A Walk To Remember with Daryl Hannah and followed that with Try Seventeen alongside Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood.
She starred in Clare Kilner's How To Deal and played the president's daughter in the romantic comedy Chasing Liberty with Stark Sands.
At the same time, she continued her singing career with the release of I Wanna Be With You and her self-titled third album.
In 2003, an album of cover versions - Coverage - featured songs by Elton John, Joan Armatrading and Todd Rundgren.
Recent work includes the skewed religious comedy Saved! alongside Jena Malone and Macaulay Culkin.
