In a bizarre tale told in jail in flashback to a psychiatrist, a rich, vain, hunky hero meets a woman who sweeps him off his feet. But then his old girlfriend engineers a car crash and he needs surgery to rebuild his disfigured face. It's the plot of Tom Cruise and Penélope Cruz's movie Vanilla Sky, but, this Hitchcock-style suspense mystery isn't that movie at all. It's the Spanish original, which also has the beguiling Cruz sizzling in her role of maneater. Eduardo Noriega is ideal as the handsome man in question in this plush, compelling, fascinating movie. Here it is, film fans, to compare and contrast - and just enjoy. The director also made The Others, produced by Cruise and starring his then wife, Nicole Kidman.
