This electrifying thriller with a fistful of twists provided a respite from 007 for Sean Connery. He plays the ne'er-do-well nephew of a wheelchair-bound millionaire and talks the old man's nurse (Gina Lollobrigida) into a marriage of convenience. The question of inheritance is greedily anticipated until the poor man's untimely death complicates matters. La Lollo and Connery play the situations crisp and tight, in direct contrast to the flamboyant cackle of Ralph Richardson's millionaire. Director Basil Dearden sometimes shows a tendency to pull Hammer horror tricks to enliven the suspense, but the acting keeps things going smoothly, the colour photography is nicely in tune with the surroundings, and the love scenes have genuine passion. Only the ending is weak and flaws the film's impact.
