Excellent colour photography on tropical locations by the award-winning Douglas Slocombe and some stirring action scenes (especially in the last reel) from director Peter Yates put the fizz into this unusual war story. Peter O'Toole excels as the sole survivor of a German U-boat raid who carries on his own post-armistice war against the submarine and its sadistic commander (Horst Janson) from a settlement on the banks of Venezuela's Orinoco River. Don't think too hard about the moral issues involved and you'll enjoy it. FACT: Largely filmed on location in Malta!
