An ambitious musical set in the Forties and Fifties from prolific director Martin Scorsese. Robert De Niro and Liza Minnelli blaze a trail as the central characters - a glamorous big band singer and an egotistical, vain and selfish saxophonist - and the film portrays every bitter fight of their tempestuous, competitive marriage. Lavish and highly stylised, the film never recovered its substantial budget and was savagely cut for release by the studio - including the eye-popping, 12-minute-long production number Happy Endings that took up two of the film's 22-week shoot and cost more than $300,000 to stage.
