No fewer than seven writers, including Irwin (The Young Lions) Shaw worked on creating a film script from Homer's Odyssey. They managed to condense the epic poem into four main incidents: the clash between Ulysses and the Cyclops, and his encounters with Circe, the Sirens and Nausicaa. This telescoping of events enabled Mario Camerini to gradually increase the pace until the hectic climax in which Ulysses takes on his wife's suitors. The mistily beautiful photography of the sea scenes greatly enhances the film.
