A dynamic British film about the air pioneers who tried to break through the sound barrier in the post-war years. Director David Lean conjures up not only tremendous tension in the flying scenes, but forceful performances, especially from Ralph Richardson, John Justin, Nigel Patrick, Dinah Sheridan and Denholm Elliott, that really make their characters spring to life. Lean's approach to his subject is unmelodramatic and, at times, likely to make the viewer miss a heartbeat or two. Although dated now, the technical side of the picture is dealt with swiftly and with enlightening simplicity, making the purpose and ultimate achievement of the project to beat the 'barrier' lucid to the layman. Among its most effective dramatic moments is the scene where a test pilot's pregnant wife tries to persuade her husband not to risk his life in a dangerous flight.
