Sherlock Holmes gets to grips with Jack the Ripper, as he was to do 14 years later in Murder by Decree. Director James Hill's all-stops-out style ensures that this is both thrilling and frightening, with lurid killings, sparkling photography and some nail-biting suspense. The last murder in particular is improbably, but successfully, drawn out to set your teeth right on edge. John Neville is a rather distant Holmes but the star-studded cast includes Anthony Quayle, Judi Dench and a young Barbara Windsor.
