The Royal Performance Film of its year, this is a calculated (and calculating) tear-jerker that ultimately does its job with clinical efficiency. Jon Voight has a lot of speeches to make as the absentee father and lifelong failure whose decision to take the children he deserted on a once-in-a-lifetime cruise to Egypt has far-reaching consequences. This rose-coloured look at the `ideal' solution to his problems obviously expects us to swallow the glutinous dose in one gulp. As I said, it's a weepie and it does make you cry.
