In between his last two assignments as James Bond, Sean Connery gave some fine performances for the cinema, and this portrait of the Norwegian explorer Amundsen is one of them. This is not an account of his race with Scott to reach the South Pole, but a later episode in his exciting career, dealing with his bid to rescue the survivors of an airship which crashed in a blizzard near the North Pole. The pictorial qualities of the film are strong, but the rest of the cosmopolitan cast, which includes British, German, Italian and Russian players, has to struggle hard to come to terms with the occasional inconsistencies in the dialogue.
