Chase films shouldn't really last as long as this. And even given that the mechanics of the thing are devilishly well achieved, this one really does ramble on a bit. The story is supposed to be true and could probably only happen in America: a young wife (Goldie Hawn) springs her husband from jail because their baby son is being fostered out. They capture a patrolman and are tracked across the length of the state by about 100 police cars. You may find Hawn's performance here rather annoying: it's all show and no heart. But Ben Johnson is excellent as the head of the pursuing cops, There's a well-wrought screenplay and on-the-ball direction by Steven Spielberg: it's just too darned long though!
