One of the strongest offerings in the current Film on 4 season, this evocative study of two young World War One veterans struggling to bury horrific memories of combat, during an idyllic English summer, maintains a gentle but firm grip on our interest throughout. Colin Firth and Kenneth Branagh are sincere and personable in the leads, and writer and director sketch in their rehabilitation against a beautifully-photographed, relaxing countryside backcloth that contributes to the gradual erasure of their personal nightmares.
