More American self-flagellation about Vietnam. This underrated film, though, is engagingly framed in the form of a weepie, with Britain's Emily Lloyd quirkily playing the nubile Kentucky teenager trying to find out more about the father who was killed in the war. Lloyd's certainly an actress to watch here, whether or not you approve of her style. And the scenes between her and Bruce Willis (as her uncle) towards the end really hit home as he fills her in on what the war was truly like. Willis is almost unrecognisable - hair lightened and slicked back greasily, droop moustache and underlip beard - in a real character performance that ups his acting stock. This is about a peculiarly American problem, but rather more of the deep emotions involved filter through here than is usual; it gets close to the nub of things but remains clear-headed throughout.
