This electrifying and totally absorbing whodunit/social drama runs like an offshoot of In the Heat of the Night, as a black military attorney from the north arrives to investigate the murder of a black master-sergeant stationed in Louisiana. The mystery element grips throughout, while your brain cells will be exercised in different directions by the screenplay's incisive probe into racism within black ranks. Solid performances from a (then) little-known cast that includes Oscar-winner Denzel Washington as one of the suspects. Adapted by Charles Fuller from his own Pulitzer Prize-winning play.
