A moderate script is lit from within by the performances of its four leading players in this story of a 13-year-old girl who leaves her elderly father's egg farm to live with her gadabout mother in the bright lights of Texas's Fort Worth. Rob Lowe, in a showy but difficult role, is better than one could have ever expected as the retarded boy who becomes the object of her affection and Winona Ryder (as the girl, in her first major role), Jane Alexander and Jason Robards all play far above the level of the lines they are asked to read.
