A sci-fi thriller that carefully welds an old plot to a new concept, as the story of police versus drug dealers is freshened up with a Futureworld-style twist. When veteran cop (James Caan) sees his partner killed by alien hitmen, revenge drives him to volunteer for the job nobody wants - partner to America's first alien detective (Mandy Patinkin). The film mistakenly underplays the alien factor in its search for the plot and a spectacular climax, but it remains edgily exciting entertainment.
