A sort of It Happened One Night for teenagers, this is amusing at times, but unexceptional considering the director is Rob Reiner, who went on to make such contrasting hits as Misery, When Harry Met Sally and Stand by Me, and that the cast is headed by John Cusack, Daphne Zuniga, Anthony (ER) Edwards and Tim Robbins. A pleasant mix of road movie and teen drama, it deals with a trip across America by two contrasting college students - he a slob, she a bluestocking - who are, inevitably, destined to fall in love. The journey is leisurely to say the least and, although Cusack has a certain charm as the fast-food junkie youth, Zuniga's girl has very little going for her outside of a pretty face and silky hair. Other characters are all rather overdrawn and the whole thing eventually becomes tiresome on its way to the predictability of the couple arriving in California and finding disillusionment with their prospective partners there.
