An unusual film for director Martin Ritt, well away from his usual `social conscience' dramas such as Norma Rae, Sounder and Conrack. There are no complications in this sunny horse-racing movie, the kind of film that's a rarity these days; and Walter Matthau is a delight as the grouchy veteran trainer and inveterate gambler. The performances of the children (Casey is a boy and Shadow his horse) confirm Ritt's facility with relatively untried players.
