A poignant drama set in Brooklyn in the early 1950s. The central character, played by Gary Frank, is a young sailor, a member of a poor, working-class family, who comes home on leave for the Christmas holidays. But his homecoming is marred by the discovery that his girl friend (played by Allison Argo) has left him for a man whose middle-class background is similar to her own. When his efforts to win her back are rejected, his feelings of rage and disappointment with his family's continuing struggle and defeat are awakened. In particular, he makes a desperate attempt to bridge the gap between himself and his father, a one-legged Irishman who scoffs at his son's dream of becoming an artist and living in Paris: top Hollywood actor Glenn Ford plays the important role of the hard-drinking father and gives one of the best performances of his career. Kevin Bacon and M Emmet Walsh are also in the supporting cast.
