Summer Movies July

Hot Summer Movies - July

We take a look at the biggest movies heading your way this summer!

This month is remake central, as Willy Wonka, War Of The Worlds and Dark Water get the Hollywood make-over treatment...

War Of The Worlds - Released: 1st July

This is a movie that had better be worth the hype - for this is the film that helped delay the production of the Indiana Jones sequel.

But fear not - for when Spielberg and Cruise get together, the whole world takes note.

But this is no Independence Day. Cruise plays a family man caught in the middle of the titular war, an everyman that simply wants to save the lives of his kids. Spielberg, meanwhile, is busy creating what could be the scariest space creatures since Alien?

Fantastic Four - Released: 22nd July

After Sin City, Batman Begins and Constantine, it appears the quality of the comic book movie is rapidly improving.

Judging by the trailers, it seems Fantastic Four has no intention of bucking that trend. As for the ingredients? A flying human torch? Check. A man made of rocks? Check. A guy that looks like Stretch Armstrong's big brother? Check. Utterly convincing special effects? Check. This could be the best colourful caper in years?

Madagascar - Released: 15th July

The CGI cartoons keep coming, this time with the most impressive cast list yet.

Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett-Smith, David Schwimmer and, believe it or not, Sacha Baron Cohen all lend their vocals to the tale of a bunch of animals who escape the zoo and find themselves stranded in the wild.

Moving away from photo-realism, this is a CGI production with a very original style of artwork. If the writing can compete with the graphics and cast, then the kids will want to see this again and again?

Dark Water - Released: 15th July

Walter 'Motorcycle Diaries' Salles is the man charged with the duty of bringing yet another successful Japanese horror to our screens.

He directs Jennifer Connelly as the single mum who moves into an apartment that has the kind of leak for which a plumber would charge a four-figure sum.

It sounds about as scary as Jack Nicholson playing the banjo, but then again the original was probably the creepiest movie to come out of Japan in the last few years. That's right - even scarier than The Grudge, which was very scary, but lost points for not making any sense.

Charlie & The Chocolate Factory - Released: 29th July

When Tim Burton and Johnny Depp attached themselves to the remake, there was no need for hype. We all know they have a chance to make a classic. The original was hugely popular in spite of its many flaws.

Then, of course, there's that trailer, which only succeeds in making you want to punch whoever made it.

Is it reflective of the film, or has Burton got the requisite dark side to his imagination that will help him interpret one of Roald Dahl's best? Fingers are firmly crossed?
