Laborious but well-acted period epic about a nervy young Jewish girl (Summer Phoenix) who decides to be an actress. Actor Ian Holm takes her under his wing, but his suggestion that she takes a lover in order to bring more experience to roles has mixed results. Frances Barber also stars in this long-winded, thoughtful drama.
