The actress first gained recognition as Imelda Staunton's awkward daughter Ethel in Mike Leigh's Vera Drake.

On stage, she played Cunegonde in John Caird's production of Candide at London's National Theatre.

She made her small screen debut as Nerissa in The Merchant of Venice before Mike Leigh cast her as a neurotic passenger in Tim Spall's taxi in All or Nothing.

Supporting roles followed in TV's Tipping the Velvet and Mayor of Casterbridge.

In 2004, she reteamed with Leigh for the drama Vera Drake.
