Thanks to her fluency in Spanish, she has also appeared in many Spanish films including Pedro Almodovar's Talk To Her and the Guillermo Del Toro-produced chiller The Orphanage.

The first child of actor/director Charlie Chaplin and granddaughter of playwright Eugene O'Neill, she was educated at boarding school in Switzerland.

After originally planning to become a ballet dancer she switched to acting (her first appearance was a cameo in her father's movie Limelight).

In 1965, director David Lean cast her in Dr Zhivago and she landed a best actress award in Spanish director Carlos Saura's La Madriguera.

[Chaplin was in a relationship with Saura for twelve years and starred in nine of his movies including Cría cuervos (1976), Elisa, vida mía (1977), and Mama Turns a Hundred (1979)].

"I thought it'd be easy to get into the movies as Charlie Chaplin's daughter. And I suppose it was. Except I wasn't much good as an actress - really terrible at the beginning."

In 1973 she played Anne of Austria in the Richard Lester romp The Three Musketeers and its sequel and also delivered a Golden Globe-nominated performance in Robert Altman's Nashville.

She would go on to star in Altman's Welcome To LA and enjoy subsequent appearances in a raft of French and Spanish movies.

In 1987, she starred in the colonial thriller White Mischief and reprised the role of Queen Anne in The Return of the Musketeers in 1989.

She was nominated for her portrayal of her own grandmother Hannah in the biopic Chaplin in 1992 and played Mrs Welland in Martin Scorsese' The Age of Innocence the following year.

Roles followed in Jane Eyre, Cousin Bette and the romantic comedy Talk To Her as she was employed in a steady stream of Hollywood as well as international titles.

She married long time companion, Chilean movie operator Patricio Castilla in 2006 and now lives in Miami, Florida.

In 2007, she played a medium in JA Bayona's disturbing thriller The Orphanage.
