Frank Miller

The legendary comic book artist landed his first directing break thanks to the persistence of film-maker Robert Rodriguez.

The director of the Spy Kids franchise offered him a co-directing credit for bringing his Sin City series to the big screen.

(Rodriguez was forced to quit the American Guild of Editors when they insisted Miller could not be credited as a director).

Prior to his debut on the Sin City series, Miller's film career included the screenplays for Robocop 2 & 3 and Elektra.

After moving to New York as a 19-year-old "farm boy" in 1976, he landed a job within weeks as a comic artist.

He went on to draw for a number of publishers, including DC and Marvel, where he teamed Spider-Man with Daredevil.

Miller was offered the regular pencilling slot on Daredevil and went on to take on the writing chores working with Klaus Janson.

Next up he created ninja assassin-for-hire Elektra before going freelance with the Ronin samurai pop adventure.

Subsequent projects included Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Elektra: Assassin and the award-winning Marsha Washington miniseries Give Me Liberty.

In 1990, he wrote the screenplay for Robocop 2 and also made an uncredited appearance as Frank the Chemist.

Three years later he penned Robocop 3 and went on to make another cameo appearance - this time as "the man with the pen in his head" - in 2003's Daredevil.

In 2005, after being plagued by director Rodriguez to make Sin City, he agreed to take a director's credit.
