Another chance for French director Alain Resnais to show his mischievous delight in narrative ambiguity, paralleling stories set in 1914 and the present day, and injecting a third story, a fairytale acted out by children. Screenwriter Jean Gruault succinctly illustrates that there are no simple solutions to problems, and that those who seek perfection are just as dangerous in their own way as those who seek ruthless domination and disorder. A film to delight Resnais' admirers and infuriate his detractors.
