A sort of updated version of THAT Shakespeare play, with interminable shots of sea and countryside. All very arty, it's set largely on a Greek island, and done with very little imagination - apart from an up-tempo version of New York, New York, performed by the Caliban character (Raul Julia) with his herd of goats. There's also one good wisecrack when one of the script's many pretentious characters refers to the actor Telly Savalas as 'attractive in a third world kind of way'. Otherwise, it's sleepytime for all but Shakespeare buffs who want to see every possible interpretation of the Master. John Cassavetes acts grouchily, as if fed up with the whole thing. Molly Ringwald, later to flit in and out of big-time stardom, was a fresh young face as his daughter.
