Robert Redford is a gambler looking for a big win in the dying days of Batista's Cuba and Lena Olin the wealthy and married woman he falls for in this overlong drama which seems to be an attempt to make a Casablanca for the Nineties. Redford's seventh collaboration with director Sydney Pollack is arguably the team's least successful, especially compared with their previous outing - Out of Africa. It looks good and the feel of Cuba during the build-up to Castro's successful bid for power is well realised. But Redford seems world-weary and disinterested and, at 140 minutes, the film is far too long. There are compensations, though, with fine supporting portrayals from Alan Arkin, Tomas Milian, Mark Rydell and an unbilled Raul Julia. Tighter editing, though, would have made a more interesting film.
