The convicted killer-turned-actor has starred in box office successes including Alien 3, Gothika and Blind Faith.
He also made his directorial debut with the boxing drama Against The Ropes with Meg Ryan and Omar Epps.
Bizarrely, he developed a passion for acting whilst serving seven years in prison for fatally stabbing a man in a street fight.
During this time he completed a two-year college degree course and went "from jail to Yale" when he landed a place at the prestigious Ivy League drama school.
From there he embarked on a successful Emmy Award-winning acting career and he was also nominated for a Golden Globe for the TV series The Piano Teacher.
After TV appearances in Cagney and Lacey and Miami Vice he made his feature debut in Cat's Eye and his first major role was as Leroy in Crocodile Dundee III.
Subsequent appearances included Sidney Lumet's Q&A as well as Dillon in the third part of the Alien horror series.
He had an uncredited role in David Fincher's Se7en and also had parts in A Time To Kill, Mimic, Black Dog and Random Hearts.
He starred opposite Sylvester Stallone in the lame D-Tox and also played a doctor in the sci-fi thriller Gothika.
He directed and starred in Against The Ropes and also starred alongside Johnny Depp and John Turturro in Secret Window.
