Sometimes amnesia thrillers can still be good, but here's one that's not as good as it thinks it is. The makings are here, but not the execution, nor the twists that should make you gasp with surprise. Given that things are not what they appear to be for car crash victim Tom Berenger, there's only one other likely explanation, and most viewers are likely to get it early on. Some of the performances are good (Greta Scacchi as Berenger's wife, Bob Hoskins as the part-time detective he hires), but most are ordinary, and one or two poor, notably veteran Theodore Bikel in an inauspicious return to films, and Debi A Monahan as the voluptuous secretary who's a ludicrous and swiftly discarded red herring. Berenger looks as though he can't make up his mind what to do with his role: fatal vacillation at the centre of a well-scored, stylish thriller that's finally just not intricate enough.
