If you've been saving up your tears for a really sloshy romance, this is it - an ace love story where you really get to know the characters. Widower James Spader is a 27-year-old high flyer of immaculate (Jewish) breeding. Susan Sarandon is a 43-year-old, foul-mouthed, sloppy, failed Catholic (`Confession made me jumpy') waitress. They get the hots for each other and if you can't guess subsequent developments, or the final outcome, then you haven't seen too many romantic movies. Sarandon and Spader (she especially) are great; as for the film itself, apart from the frankness of its dialogue, it could have been made 20, 30, even 50 years ago. Some things, including Hollywood wish-fulfilment, thankfully never change!
