What Warren Beatty did for hairdressing in Shampoo, Patrick Dempsey does for pizza delivery here. This is a conventional but cute and often comic sex frolic, kept afloat by Dempsey's own brand of charm and clumsiness (he even dances! ) as the pizza boy who finds himself sexually in demand by thirtysomething woman customers, despite having the kind of frame that, in the old muscle-man adverts would be guaranteed to have sand kicked all over it. Time and again, Dempsey's energy - and stylish direction - overcomes the cliched conventionality of the situations, though his producers help a lot by surrounding him with a very good cast that includes Kate Jackson, Carrie Fisher (who made her debut in Shampoo! ), Kirstie Alley, Barbara Carrera, Kim Miyori and Robert Ginty. Another winner from director Joan Micklin Silver, whose record of consistency is superior to most of her female contemporaries.
