Take a few dinosaurs. Add state-of-the-art special effects. Stir in an old-fashioned 'save the world from evil' story in a modern computer-game setting, and you have a recipe for success - at least with kids who love the game and its characters, while their parents sit bewildered in adjoining armchairs. Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo play a pair of intrepid plumbers who answer a call from a maiden in distress and enter a nether world full of slimy monsters. Dennis Hopper has a field day as the monsters' tyrannical leader in a fantasy-adventure for teens and under that entertains but could have been so much better. We yield to no one in our admiration for the directors' critically panned version of DOA, but they have pretty well blown a promising premise here with this over-charged, OTT ear-blaster.

Could have been better? disappointment? Hardly. Compare the Mario Brothers to today's game adaptions and I say it is THE best adaptation. Worthwhile entertainment for the kids in us all.
