Director Martin Scorsese returns with actors Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci in tow to the gangster theme that served them so well in the critically acclaimed GoodFellas.
This time, De Niro is a smalltime Mafia hood and successful gambler who rises to the top in the world of Las Vegas casinos, but who is brought down by the actions of his drug-addicted wife (Sharon Stone) and psychotic best friend (who else but Pesci?).
Epic in scale, Scorsese turns in a breathtaking tale of money, sex, greed, twisted loyalties and naked ambition. And it's ultra-violent.
But the high point of the film has to be the transformation of Sharon Stone from beautiful bimbo to award-winning actress of great, untapped talent. Her performance (which earned her the Best Actress Golden Globe Award) is nothing short of miraculous.
The camerawork is dazzling, the sets and costumes spot-on. Highly recommended, but not for the weak of constitution.
