Dubbed the "Queen of the Indies" by Time magazine, Posey has racked up more than 30 films in a seven year period.
The daughter of a car salesman, she originally wanted to study ballet and studied at North Carolina School of Arts before heading to New York.
Named after 50s model Suzy Parker, her career kicked off in the daytime soap As The World Turns before her first feature Joey Breaker.
Small roles followed in Coneheads and Richard Linklater's ode to youth Dazed and Confused before she got regular work on Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City.
Non-studio features such as Sleep With Me, Hal Hartley's Amateur and most especially Party Girl showed her ability to carry a film.
Posey made memorable appearances in Frisk as a psychotic murderess, and in Christopher Guest's comedy Waiting for Guffman.
Other films includede Basquiat, The Daytrippers and Linklater's subUrbia and she continued her winning streak in 1997 with an award-winning turn as a woman with an unhealthy identification with Jackie Onassis in The House of Yes.
Posie played a yuppie wife in Best in Show and an uptight wife in the Jennifer Jason Leigh directed film Anniversary Party.
She took the lead role in the dramatic mystery The Event and co-starred with Kyra Sedwick and Fairuz Balk in Personal Velocity.
She did not abandon her comedic roots though, and was working again with Christopher Guest on his latest semi-improvised mockumentary A Mighty Wind.
In 2004, she appeared in the blockbuster sequel Blade: Trinity as the feline fanged nemesis of Wesley Snipes.
