For the American market, Germany's young star Marco Hofschneider seemed close enough to play a French exchange student in Fifties Virginia who falls in love with a young black girl (Robin Givens) and gets the tongues of bigots wagging. A well-meaning and good-spirited film turns into a bit of a plod thanks to a predictable and over-earnest script. But the acting is engaging enough, even if the principals don't make you believe there's much sexual chemistry between them.
