This was the third major outing for charismatic comic Jim Carrey and casts him as Lloyd, a Jerry Lewis-type dimwit with a dream - to open his own worm factory and call it I Got Worms.
One day, Lloyd finds a briefcase and persuades his equally thick pal Harry (Jeff Daniels) to head to Colorado and return to the case to its rightful and gorgeous owner Mary (Lauren Holly).
But, being dumb - and Harry being even dumber - the pair don't realise that the case contains ransom money to release Mary's kidnapped husband.
So, all the way to Colorado, the unsuspecting duo, in dog-trainer Harry's flea-infested van, the outside of which looks like a sheepdog, are pursued by both kidnappers and cops.
It's a lowbrow comedy of many amusing moments rather than a rib-tickling riot.
But the up-front, ingenuous quality of its rude fun creeps up on you and the hi-jinks get funnier in the second half of the film.
Not, though, for the easily offended.
