Whatever possessed Dennis Quaid to make this grim and dismal film Heaven only knows. He plays a bomb disposal expert whose wife (a tiny role for Nastassja Kinski) and son are killed in an attack by Islamic extremists. After mowing down the assassins in their mosque, Quaid and buddy Peter (Stellan Skarsgard, who lasts barely longer than Kinski) join the Foreign Legion, then become mercenaries in Bosnia, where Quaid, still a soulless killing machine, saves the life of a Serb girl raped by Muslims and becomes involved in trying to get her and her baby out of the country. Guts, gloom and the relentless killing of innocent victims persist throughout this truly depressing film: Quaid seems dazed, as well he might in the face of such unrelenting misery.
