This twisty thriller not only promises a little more than it delivers, but hasn't quite got the overall grip it needs. Even so, there's enough here to keep mystery fans guessing pretty busily. College friends Alessandro Nivola and Josh Brolin meet for a drink, Nivola goes home and Brolin picks up Kathy (Reese Witherspoon) who subsequently accuses him of rape. Soon it becomes apparent that Nivola and Witherspoon have wrought an elaborate sting on Brolin that's gone somewhat awry. The rest of the movie explains why - and the consequences. Nivola is good here, but the remainder of the cast is no better than moderate, which slightly undercuts the tale's neat twist just before the end. Okay fare, though, for a late night.
