What begins as a fascinating portrait of gypsy life and lore soon spirals down into routine melodramatics, made eminently watchable by a richly talented cast. Sterling Hayden is quite outstanding as a sort of Romany Godfather and the other players include Eric Roberts (Runaway Train), Susan Sarandon (The Witches of Eastwick) Brooke Shields (Pretty Baby), Annie Potts (Ghost Busters), Annette O'Toole (48 Hrs) and Judd Hirsch (Ordinary People and TV's Taxi). Also effectively deployed are the ever-ebullient Shelley Winters and violin solos played by the inimitable Stephane Grappelli.
